How to Find a College: Where To Start The Process
Hello fellow high school students! Figuring out where to start your college search and which direction to take it in can be tough. But gone are the days where you feel clueless about where to start when researching for college. I’m here to give you a virtual helping hand with these tips to get you started.
Step 1: Do a little self-reflection. Take some time to write out what is important to you by answering important questions like:
- What are your favorite subjects?
- What tasks do you excel at?
- What are your hobbies?
- What clubs and organizations do you look forward to joining and how they can benefit you after graduating?
Step 2: Prioritize what’s important to you. What exactly are you looking for in a college or university? Think about your preferences in the size of the school and its location. Do you want to be in a city or in a rural area? Close to home or far away? Big student population or small? Do you have a specialty you’re interested in? Make sure the schools on your list offer programs in your area of interest.
Step 3: Find guidance. Talk to your school counselor about your search and discuss your strengths and interests. He or she may be able to suggest schools that you never would have considered.
Step 4: Visit campus. Go on a college tour in order to experience that physical feel. Do you feel at home? Can you see yourself being happy at the school? See if you can find a current college student who is an alumnus from your high school to give you a tour of the college and get his or her thoughts on what life is like on campus.
Looking for the right college doesn’t have to feel like an impossible and daunting task. Following these simple steps can get you started on the path to discovering the perfect school.
