In fall 2013, 17% of the nearly 7.4 million community college students were first-time freshmen. In fact, according to the American Association of Community Colleges, 41% of all first-year students are enrolled in a community or technical college. Unfortunately, once these students have begun, it isn’t easy for them to finish. Only 38% of first-time college students who enrolled in a community college in fall 2009 earned a credential from a two- or four-year institution within six years.
Los Medanos College, one of 113 California Community Colleges, knows first-hand how critical it is to engage with their first year student population. “We need to connect early on to help our students navigate through challenging times. At Los Medanos, student success is on all our plates,” says Robin Armour, Director of Admissions & Records.
As part of the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) led by the Chancellor’s Office, Los Medanos College began implementing tools from the Starfish Enterprise Success Platform – specifically, early alert and degree planning – in 2015. In this Webinar, you’ll learn about their recipe for implementing student success technologies within a statewide initiative. The team will share ideas for evaluating current systems, engaging faculty with immediate reinforcement, catalyzing multi-campus collaboration, and maintaining project momentum.
In 2017, Los Medanos College was recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of the “Top 150 Community Colleges.”
