Mapping a Lifetime of Opportunity: Hobsons University 2016

The 11th annual Hobsons University is off to an amazing start with more than 900 higher education professionals gathering at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas for three days of product training, networking, and fun. Here’s a recap of Day 1 of #HU2016.

After a day of pre-conference training on Hobsons’ admissions and advising products, including Radius, Connect, ApplyYourself, Matching, and Starfish, attendees were welcomed by Hobsons CEO Craig Heldman and President of Advising and Admissions Solutions Stephen M. Smith, who shared Hobsons’ vision for helping students achieve their education and life goals.

Smith, who also serves on the boards of College Possible and the National College Access Network, cited sobering statistics from the Pell Institute on the disparities in college access and college completion among students based on family income level: 77 percent of students from upper-income families succeed in earning a bachelor’s degree by age 24 while only 9 percent of low-income students do.

“We have a massive problem in America, a massive disparity,” Smith said. “[This] is not a world we should be satisfied living in.”

The challenge, he said, is for education professionals at each stage in the education lifecycle to stop pointing fingers at the stage before them and start working together across K-12 and higher education to make sure all students have access to a great education and the support to take full advantage of it.

Working together, Smith said, educators can give students “a gift that can never be taken away -- the gift of a better life.”

Throughout the day, attendees participated in hands-on training led by Hobsons staff and clients and visited The Hobsons Hub to take selfies against the Hobsons backdrop, pick up souvenir conference buttons, and to share their success stories with Hobsons staff. Participants in the #HUHaiku Twitter contest accepted the challenge of writing and tweeting about the conference in a three-line poem with five syllables, seven syllables, five syllables.

Monday evening, the Innovation & Learning Lab opened, offering clients an opportunity to talk with Hobsons product experts to ask questions and provide feedback and suggestions for future enhancements.

The evening ended with a warm welcome to Las Vegas and time to connect with Hobsons U partners during the fun-filled reception, complete with jugglers, acrobats, and other Las Vegas performers.
