One year ago, as the president of AASA, The School Superintendents Association, I had the pleasure of introducing Redefining Ready! - a new way to assess readiness in our nation's public school students.
Redefining Ready! is a researched-based approach that aligns with what we already know: Standardized test scores do not tell the full story of a student's skill set, nor solely predict a student's likelihood of success in college. Our students should never be reduced to the score they earn on a single test.
Our students are innovators. They are critical thinkers. They leave our schoolhouse doors with the academic skills they need to succeed and the experiences they need to excel in the 21st century.
Our students are earning college credits and completing career credentials and working real internships before they graduate. They are completing Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes. They're leading clubs and playing sports and performing on stages. They're volunteering in our communities, making America better.
Our students are leaving our schools college, career and life ready.
Redefining Ready! considers all those things in determining college, career and life readiness, using tangible metrics including goals for GPA, academics, FAFSA completion, and dual credit course completion.
Following the launch of Redefining Ready!, we have urged educators to use the reauthorization of the Every Student Succeeds Act as an opportunity to redefine readiness in their own states. We have received signatures and resolutions of support from hundreds of villages, boards of education, schools and educators across America.
In the last year, Redefining Ready! has become a movement.
This year, we are proud to team with Hobsons to offer America's students the chance to compete for more than $25,000 in postsecondary scholarships. Students will be required to share how they are Redefining Ready! and demonstrate which of the standards illustrate their story.
They'll do this through a brief (30-second) video on Twitter, using the hashtag #RedefiningReady and tagging @AASAHQ and @Hobsons.
Awards will be distributed nationally and regionally, and videos will be judged by panels of experts in the field of education and college and career readiness. More information will be available March 20 on the Redefining Ready! website.
Please encourage your students to join in this fun and interactive opportunity. Let's get this scholarship trending on Twitter to ensure our entire nation knows about this incredibly worthwhile AASA movement!
