Ramapo College of New Jersey is a four-year public liberal arts college located in Mahwah, New Jersey. The college serves more than 6,000 students and is intentional about improving academic advising. Frustrated with the slow manual processes involved with student outreach, they needed to invest in a comprehensive student success solution in order to serve students at a greater capacity.

Starfish by Hobsons went live in 2013, helping Ramapo effectively and efficiently connect more than 12 offices and allow faculty and staff to support a wider range of students. Before Starfish, three departments were focused on outreach to only 30 percent of the student body.

Using Starfish also empowers students to be proactive about their success. Eighty percent of surveyed first-year students indicated a positive impact on academic performance.

Academic report survey participation has dramatically increased. For the first time, students in more than 50 percent of courses completed surveys and 77 percent of faculty submitted academic progress surveys.

“What we really see is that [Starfish] not only allows us to connect with students, but it also allows us to connect with ourselves. We have more conversations across silos since implementing Starfish than we ever had before,” said Joseph Connell, Assistant Vice President of Student Success.

Ramapo’s success earned them the 2016 Education Advances Award at Hobsons’ annual user conference. They plan to integrate predictive analytics into their student outreach for the spring 2016 semester.
