It’s almost that time of year. July 15th is just around the corner and that means it’s time to start thinking about what to pack for the 2014 Naviance Summer Institute! And if this is your first time at NSI, you know that you’ll be learning from Naviance experts at in-person pre-conference training courses, acquiring best practices from more than 40 educational sessions, and taking the opportunity to network with your peers. But what you may not know is how to pack for the conference. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Here are 11 things that we think are essential to bring to NSI this year.

#1: Laptop

This one’s obvious. If you’re attending any pre-conference sessions, or want to log in to Naviance to try out some of the things you’ll be learning while at NSI, a laptop is a must. Make sure to bring any accessories too, like a wireless mouse or laptop bag.

#2: Tablet and/or Smart Phone

If you don’t feel like lugging your laptop all the way to Palm Springs, a tablet or smart phone will help you take notes, snap pictures, and share your NSI highlights on Twitter. Make sure to use the #nsi2014 hashtag to have your tweets and photos show up in the NSI stream!

#3: Business cards

You’ll be meeting lots of new people, so make sure to bring some business cards. Whether you hand them out to everyone you speak with, or just to the people you want to connect with again in the future, is up to you. Include your name, email address, school name, position, and Twitter handle, or any additional ways you want people to contact you.

#4: Cords and chargers for all of your devices

It might go without saying, but remember to bring all of the cords and chargers for all of your devices – phone, tablet, laptop, camera, etc. There may not always be a place to plug in, so make sure you start your day with a full battery, and plug in whenever possible! Which leads into our next item…

#5: A mini power strip

When you do find an outlet, someone may already be using it. But if you have a power strip with you, it’s easy to plug it in then plug everyone else’s cords into it as well. Just wait and see how many friends you make when you pull one of these technological wonders out of your bag.

#6: A great carry-all

Speaking of bags, you’ll need a great carry-all to tote all of your stuff from session to session. Get one with a wide strap and lots of compartments for various things like extra snacks, swag, business cards, and your laptop. Satchels, messenger bags, backpacks, and briefcases will all work in a pinch.

#7: Layers

While it may be hot outside, sometimes conference halls can get chilly on the inside, so make sure to pack lots of layers. Cardigans, blazers, and scarfs may come in handy if you tend to run on the cool side.

#8: Comfortable shoes

You don’t want to get stuck in uncomfortable shoes all day. No one likes blisters or cramped toes. Enough said.

#9: Casual wear for the Welcome Reception

The NSI Welcome Reception is a fun atmosphere to welcome the attendees and greet our guests, so feel free to let your hair down and dress casually. For the rest of NSI, there is no official dress code. You’re encouraged to wear whatever is comfortable to you. We’ve had attendees come dressed in shorts and t-shirts, and some in full business attire, but most tend to wear business casual during the day.

#10: Swim suit, sunscreen and sunglasses

Bring your swim suit, sunscreen, and sunglasses to take advantage of the amenities at the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa. You’ll also want to bring the appropriate clothing for golf, tennis, the spa, and/or the fitness room.

#11: Naviance Summer Institute t-shirts

Want something special to remember the occasion? Order one of our 2014 NSI t-shirts and we’ll have it ready for you when you get to Palm Springs.
