How can an institution build capacity and consensus among stakeholders for a new retention tool?
The National Clearinghouse Research Center released its seventh annual report on current data around high school graduates’ postsecondary outcomes. Findings in this report show that there continues to be a large gap between higher-income and low-income high schools in student enrollment, persistence, and completion.
The topics and sessions at the conference became immediately personal and related to Starfish as we discussed students’ need for the sense of belonging, the need for faculty engagement and research on student challenges, and the need to identify and address root causes of performance/outcomes. These are topics that the Strategic Consultants address on the campuses with whom we work.

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) has chosen to collaborate with Hobson’s Starfish Enterprise Success Platform in order to increase retention and graduation rates on their campus.
The college will begin working with Starfish in an expanded capacity beginning in the fall of 2019.
Hobsons, the education technology leader and company behind Naviance, announced on September 18, 2019 that St. Charles Parish Public Schools in Luling, LA, has selected Naviance as its exclusive provider of college, career and life readiness solutions. St. Charles Parish Publics Schools is the first school district in the state of Louisiana to implement Naviance.
Hobsons is teaming up with Temple University’s Hope Center for College, Community and Justice to study and battle the growing problems of food and housing insecurity among college students. The partnership was announced July 30, 2019 under the banner Starfish Project Hope, reflecting the combination of Hobsons’ Starfish Enterprise Success module with the research and action agenda of the Hope Center.
For decades, the college-admissions process has been shrouded in mystery. But these days, big data, and a popular college planning tool, are taking much of the guesswork out of applying to college.
Students who use Naviance are more likely to be accepted where they apply—but may be deterred from reaching for highly selective schools.

SUNY Broome, 2019 Hobsons Educational Advances Award winner, is SUNY Broome is a comprehensive community college located in Upstate New York’s Southern Tier. The college has approximately 10,000 students annually, serving more than 4,000 full-time and nearly 3,000 part-time students per semester.
