In the U.S., the idea of attracting people to college is based on the belief that together, as a country, the citizens will succeed, says Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President of University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The goal in higher education is the same, “to help people dream about their possibilities and reach those dreams.”

However, to be exceptionally successful, Dr. Freeman stresses the importance of open-mindedness in the higher education institution. True education should be teaching students to listen to other points of view. A well-rounded education expands beyond disciplines and involves students of diverse backgrounds hearing another perspective.

An open campus community is essential for an enlightening education, but Dr. Hrabowksi stresses the importance of communicating with and supporting students who are the first in their families to attend college. These  students need to know there is a community of first generation students across college campuses and know the resources available to help them succeed.

Higher education is a tool to achieve dreams, believes Dr. Hrabowski. Education is inspiring, and students must persevere and be resilient. But most importantly, they must never give up.
