Higher education institutions face rising pressure to deliver exceptional student experiences and successful student outcomes. A common approach to providing personalised welfare support includes investment in personal and academic tutoring programmes. Unfortunately, student engagement in these programmes can be hindered by cumbersome appointment scheduling, inefficient processes, unmonitored participation, and limited access to centralised data.
Student retention has gained greater attention in recent years due to increased scrutiny by legislators, accrediting bodies, the media and the general public. However, while a large body of research is available regarding college student retention, many institutions are still grappling with decisions, including which programs and strategies to implement and how to assess their effectiveness.
As post-secondary learners make more informed choices from an increasing number of education options, focusing on their success will be the key driver of institutional effectiveness and prosperity. This paper examines how people interact with higher education today, showing how that relationship will continue to evolve to meet individual and societal needs.
Poor retention and completion rates symptomize the challenges colleges and universities face in their attempts to meet the needs and aspirations of diverse student populations. Early models of student attrition identified numerous student factors and characteristics that increase the likelihood a student will not complete college (i.e., at-risk characteristics). Institutions have used this information to develop programs and implement technology to target these specific factors and to mitigate risks.
