Java Software Engineer - Higher Education (Arlington, VA; Cincinnati, OH; or Vancouver, WA)

Hobsons is seeking talented and energetic Java Developers to join our fast growing Next Generation Platform Team in our Higher Education Division.

The Next Generation Platform Team is building for the future at Hobsons by taking advantage of innovative & emerging technologies, utilizing a Java stack.

We are currently seeking junior, mid, and senior Java Developers to join our fast growing Next Gen Team with positions in Arlington, VA (Washington DC Metro Area); Cincinnati, OH; and Vancouver, WA (Portland Metro Area).

Job Summary

As a Next Gen Team member in the Higher Education division, you will have the opportunity to work on software currently being used by hundreds of universities and tens of thousands of students on a daily basis, as well as designing new modules and integrations with external systems. You will be expected to introduce your teammates to new technologies and learn new technologies and keep abreast of new technologies and tools.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Java experience, consummate with your experience level. Core Java, Servlets, JDBC, Swing, JUnit, & multithreading, as well as some of the more esoteric nuances of the JVM. Been working in C# for the past few years? We’ll take that into consideration.
  • Knowledge of how databases work; if you haven’t had the opportunity to work with cloud/NoSQL databases professionally, you’ve nonetheless experimented with them.
  • Experience with modern web design paradigms & tools, such as AJAX, JSON, JavaScript, and ExtJS.
  • A belief that security, localization, performance, and extensibility are built in from the beginning when writing code.
  • You realize that although standards may be dull, they are also important.
  • Knowing that at some point in life you’ve been asynchronously processed.
  • Knowledge that there are better transports for a message than a bottle.
  • A pragmatic view of software development.
  • You have experienced an agile development paradigm, and understand why best practices are called that.
  • Knowing not only how to write a web service, but why it should be used in the first place.
  • To be inquisitive! Have you ever wondered what all those Java garbage collection parameters really do? Experimented with them?

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree with a computer science (or related) major, from an accredited institution of higher learning strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience with Java & J2EE technologies is required for a junior position, 5 years for a mid-position, and 11 for a senior position.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience with modern web design paradigms is required for a junior position, 5 for mid and senior positions.
  • For a senior position, experience researching, defining, and documenting standards is required.
  • For mid and senior level positions, experience designing and implementing web services, both REST and SOAP, is required.
  • Basic relational database and SQL experience is required. Experience with cloud & NoSQL databases is preferred.
  • Experience with developing cloud based Internet applications is preferred.
  • Knowledge of OO theory & software patterns is required, consummate with your experience level.


Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
