Applications Architect (Arlington, VA)

Hobsons is seeking an innovative and talented Applications Architect to help us create the next revolution in higher education.

The Next Generation Platform team - based in Cincinnati, OH or Arlington, Virginia - needs an architect with experience in designing large scale & high traffic web-centric applications as part of this re-platforming project. This key position will be responsible for unifying existing applications deployed in various technologies; improving the stability and scalability of the existing applications; and designing an open and robust platform that can easily integrate with our clients, partners, and future acquisitions.

You need to have a deep knowledge of Java, be self-motivated, looking to the future, and be able to align technology & business needs. You will be challenged to design an architecture for deployed applications that anticipates a future deployment to various cloud paradigms - and which is also extensively testable via automated tools, all the while serving existing customers and applications.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • To be highly proficient in Java, with at least 7 years of experience writing code
  • Experienced in Application Architecture; with minimum of 8 years of technical background
  • The ability and the desire to get into the weeds with the development team
  • Experience with web-centric application architectures; service orientated architectures; and the integration of Java applications with applications written in other technologies.
  • To be able to design architectures and select technologies that lend themselves to automated testing.
  • Hands on experience with some of the major cloud providers, and experience architecting applications for a cloud paradigm, while not required, are definitely intriguing.
  • To have some experience with internationalization, including multi-language interface web-centric applications.
  • Ability to document & communicate abstract technological concepts for technical & non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to translate loosely defined requirements into architectural documents suitable for use by distributed development teams.
  • And finally, to be inquisitive! Have you ever wondered what all those Java garbage collection parameters really do?

 

Minimum Qualifications

BS, BSCS, BSEE Required, MIS Highly Preferred

In depth and proven experience with:

  • Java/J2EE technologies & internet application paradigms, such as AJAX, REST, SOAP, XML, & JSON
  • Internet based application architectures, especially with the development of MVC architecture based web applications. Highly experienced with the integration of front end components to Java services and backend service layers
  • Distributed applications and architectures, especially with respect to the unification of heterogeneous technologies and legacy systems, as well as the use of multiple database technologies
  • Information architecture, including the definition of ontologies, standards, & specifications
  • UML and other architectural artifacts, such as Capability, Operational, and Data viewpoints
  • Non-relational/NoSQL database solutions 

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
